Join us in BurnerSphere for an artist talk with El Niño, the artist behind Coquí — a love letter to Puerto Rico, built from the playa dust up.
If you’ve ever been to Puerto Rico, you know the sound. Ko-Kee. It fills the night air from the rainforest canopy, small but impossibly loud, impossible to ignore. The Coquí is more than a frog — it is the heartbeat of an island, the symbol of a people, and the song that every Boricua carries with them no matter how far from home they go.
El Niño brought that song to Black Rock City — and the world noticed. Coquí was awarded the Burning Man 2024 Honoraria Art Grant and took home Best of Show at the Reno-Tahoe International Art Show. But beyond the recognition, this piece is something deeply personal. It is an invitation to step inside the world of a tiny arboreal frog and feel, fully and completely, what it’s like to live inside a rainforest alive with music.
Come hear El Niño talk about the journey behind Coquí — the homeland that inspired it, the craft that brought it to life, and what it means to carry the soul of Puerto Rico into the desert and share it with the world.
Because some songs are too important to sing alone.
