Sustainability Event PM 2 – Alternative Energy Zone: Fossil Fuel Alternatives

The Alternative Energy Zone started in 2000 with 50 people camping without generators. It has since grown into a village of hundreds, spread across dozens of camps, all running entirely on solar and wind power. No fossil fuel generators, not one, for over two decades on the open desert.

This panel opens with a quick look at what AEZ is and how a community of engineers, tinkerers, and curious first-timers built a generator-free village that actually works. From there, three AEZ members each take a few minutes to walk through their own system, real setups built and tested on the playa, covering everything from solar arrays to wind power to the creative engineering that keeps a camp running comfortably without plugging into fossil fuels.

If you’ve ever wondered what off-grid living actually looks like in practice, this is the session for you.
